Older or single-glaze windows are largely inefficient at retaining heat. As much as 20-30% of your home's warmth can be lost through your windows.
Uninsulated timber, especially in New Zealand where the sealants wear down over time, is one of the main causes of this heat loss. You might notice the difference in temperature if you put your hand to the corner of your window pane. Cold air leakage and inefficient insulation leads to condensation and moisture buildup, as well as colds and illness.
Double glazed, aluminium windows are much better at retaining heat. Using specialised gases between window panes, they greatly improve heat retention during the winter. Over the summer, more advanced sliding or bifold options allow for an improved airflow between the outside and inside of your home.
