Healthy Homes Compliance

As of November 2022, all tenancies are required to comply with the new updated healthy home standards. This means that some landlords will have to update existing rentals within the next few years.

The Healthy Homes standard outlines five key housing standards that must be complied with to a reasonable standard; heating, insulation, ventilation, moisture ingress and drainage and draught prevention.

Heating: Landlords must provide one or more fixed heaters to meet the minimum requirement for the main living room.
Insulation: Modern ceiling and underfloor insulation is compulsory for all rentals.
Ventilation: Living and dining rooms, kitchens and bedrooms must have openable windows. Kitchens and bathrooms must have extractor fans or a ventilation system.
Moisture and drainage: Properties must have a means for removing storm, surface and ground water. Enclosed sub-floor spaces must have moisture barriers.
Draughts: There must be no unreasonable gaps or holes in walls, ceilings, windows, skylights floors or doors. Fireplaces must be closed off in older homes if unused.
